Will I come back again in 6 months’ time? No, there are better alternatives

Yi Ru Xing means “desire for arising prosperity” in Chinese. This stall sells traditional Singapore mixed vegetable rice. For this review, I chose bitter gourd, curry chicken thigh and steamed egg as my food items. I was stunned when told by the female owner that the cost was $6.00. I understood the chicken thigh was huge (the largest I have tasted in recent years), but charging $4.00 for it was really too much. Honestly, I could get a full Japanese meal set at Old Airport Road for $4.00.

Let’s move on to food quality since Singaporeans do not mind paying more for good food. Bitter gourd was bland and sticky. Chicken thigh was juicy, soft, tender and came with silky smooth skin. Curry was too mild tasting and watery. Steamed egg was so few in portions that I forgot that I have finished eating it! Rice was well cooked but did not mix well with the below average curry.

In conclusion, the food here was average tasting, few in portions and expensive. The owners are really lucky they do not have a mixed vegetable rice competitor nearby or else they will really “slap flies” during lunch and dinner peak hours.
